As millions of high schools across the country are in the middle of prom season, Time Magazine fittingly released promo photos of President Barack Obama on Thursday.
In the photos, a 17-year-old Obama is seen flaunting a white dinner jacket while draped in lei on the night of his senior prom in 1979. Also in the photos is his date, Megan Hughes, and another couple, Greg Orme and Kelli Allman.
"It was a really fun, happy time. We were all cracking up, and everyone was smiling," said Allman, a former classmate of Obama who provided the photos to Time.
"It was pretty typical from there out as far as what happens at prom: the dinner and the dancing and the photos," she added.
Allman called Obama "intelligent and witty," but said he didn't date much in high school.
"He and I really clicked. We had great vibes between us," Allman said.
Back then, the president was simply known as "Barry" when he attended the Punahou School in Hawaii. Greg Orme, a fellow varsity basketball player, was his best friend.
"They were like brothers," Allman told Time.
On prom night, the pair double-dated. Obama and his date Megan Hughes, a student at the Hawaii School for Girls at La Pietra, joined Orme at Allman's house, where the two couples sipped champagne before going to the dance and then an after-party.
Allman also shared that the future U.S. president wrote in her high school yearbook.
"It has been so nice getting to know you this year," Obama wrote. "You are extremely sweet and foxy, I don't know why Greg would want to spend any time with me at all! You really deserve better than clowns like us; you even laugh at my jokes!"
