'House of Cards' Season 2: Casting Begins In Maryland, Kevin Spacey and Governor O'Malley Attend Preakness [Photos]

"House of Cards" was the first breakout his series that followed Netflix's innovative 'watch anytime' format on its Watch Instantly Channel. The network released the entire first season at once, allowing viewers to watch as they please, as much as they please, whenever they please. They loved it. Not only did the series achieve major success, but fans also raved about the show's format, so it's no wonder Netflix picked it up for a second season.

Production on the follow-up season is finally moving forward as casting is currently underway in Maryland. Governor Martin O'Malley recently announced that the show had returned to Maryland for the tax credits the state offers to film productions. The Legislature more than tripled Maryland's film tax credit for $25 million for the next fiscal year.

On May 14, O'Malley tweeted several pictures while hanging out on set, writing, "On set at @HouseofCards Season 2 - a great #Maryland film industry / @Netflix production creating 5,700 jobs." It seems the decision to shoot in Maryland is a win-win for all parties. Check out the photos above.

O'Malley wasn't the only one pleased with the producer's choice to shoot in Maryland. Kevin Spacey, who plays Frank Underwood, the central character in "House of Cards," was also pleased with the governor's visit and the state's film tax incentive. He tweeted back at O'Malley, thanking him for stopping by the set and for supporting the tax credits.

O'Malley and Spacey met up once again on Saturday during Preakness. O'Malley tweeted a photo of the two enjoying themselves, writing, "Great seeing @KevinSpacey at the @PreaknessStakes. Film & horses: two great economic boosts for MD."

According to The Baltimore Sun, nearly 1,000 people showed up at the Bel Air Reckord Armory for casting calls on Saturday. Local casting director Kimberly Skyrme and her staff took headshots and resumes and spent several minutes talking with each person in attendance throughout the day.

Although Netflix has yet to announce an official release date, production on season 2 of "House of Cards" is underway and making things happen in big places.
