The Billboard Music Awards 2013, which was hosted by comedian Tracy Morgan and held in Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena, included energetic performances from artists across different genres with many award winners performing on stage.
Country sweetheart Taylor Swift was one of the night's biggest winners, taking home eight awards, including Artist of the Year. Swift also performed her new pop single "22," which has fans and audience members out of their seats and dancing to the fun beat. British boy band One Direction also took home several awards, as did "Somebody That I Used To Know" singer Gotye.
However, it was the Milestone Award win by 19-year-old pop singer Justin Bieber that caused the most commotion. Bieber, who performed twice at the awards, was booed as he stood on the stage to accept the award. As the booing settled down, Bieber said, "I'm 19 years old and I think I'm doing a pretty good job." He added, "I'm an artist and I should be taken seriously." The teen's fans quickly took to Twitter to defend him, calling those who booed the artist "haters."
Host Tracy Morgan later defended the singer by telling the crowd, "Don't be booing anyone here, this isn't the Apollo."
Bieber wasn't the only one to get some major shade during the ceremony, on-off again girlfriend Selena Gomez may have gotten dissed by singer Kid Rock shortly after her performance. The country singer, who appeared on stage to present rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, said "Let's give it up for people lip-synching under pre-recorded music!" While the comment seemed directed at Gomez, some are speculating it was actually meant for singer Chris Brown, who had performed his single "Fine China."
The night concluded with a special performance by Icon Award winner Prince.
