Pokémon X and Y Box Art Released: Xerneas and Yveltal Front as Nintendo 3DS' Games Mascots; Game Playable in 2D [Slideshow]

The box arts for "Pokémon X and Y" have been released ahead of its October launch date.

Continuing the tradition since generation two's "Gold," "Silver," and "Crystal," legendary Pokémon will once again serve as the new game's mascots.

The Nintendo 3DS-exclusive games will have Xerneas front "Pokémon X" and Yveltal for "Pokémon Y."

The decision to have Xerneas and Yveltal serve as the sixth generation's mascots isn't surprising as the two were among the first new Pokémon to be confirmed in January and the first letters of their names correspond with the games' titles.

The covers for "Pokémon X and Y" feature Xerneas and Yveltal in the same stock image as provided by The Pokémon Company International earlier this year. Xerneas' cover features a forest background along a giant X while Yveltal features an image of the sky and cloud with the letter Y.

The upcoming games will be the first of the main series to be in 3D, although, the covers confirm "X and Y" will be playable in 2D. It is recommended that 3D mode is for ages seven and older.

The box art reveal comes as four new Pokémon were recently announced. In addition, it has been confirmed the playable main characters will have the ability to change attire and accessories. The sixth generation game will take place in a star-shaped land named Kalos, which features mountains and rivers and Lumiose City serving as the central hub of the area.
