The Champions league final features a tremendous amount of storylines. Will Bayern Munich earn redemption from past UCL failures? Will Borussia Dortmund finish off its fairy tale run on a positive note? Which of these two rivals will come out on top? How will the game affect the rivalry?
The most intriguing story might revolve around Mario Götze, "the German Lionel Messi."
The 20-year old recently crossed the rivalry line by announcing his departure from Borussia Dortmund next season. He will start playing for Bayern Munich next year after signing a 31 million pound contract a few weeks ago.
This new development will obviously remain at the forefront of the match, especially if Götze plays in the final. Götze hurt his thigh during the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid and was doubtful. However, recent reports indicate that he may be fit and ready to compete against his new team.
"Right now it looks like Götze could be ready for the final [on 25 May]," Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp said. "His recovery is going according to plan."
"We will intensify training gradually during the week and the plan is for him to join the team training next week," he added. "Then we will see if it is good enough."
Götze has been instrumental in Borussia Dortmund's run to the final. He put up two goals and five assists in 11 Champions league matches. In 23 Bundesliga matches, Götze has put up 10 goals and eight assists on 52 shots.
Götze debuted in 2009 for Borussia Dortmund and helped the team to Bundesliga titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Bayern Munich won the title this season.
