Reese Witherspoon will join Joaquin Phoenix in Paul Thomas Anderson's new film "Inherent Vice."

The actress, who has been in tabloids over the past weeks due to her arrest, has joined the production along with Jena Malone and Martin Short.  

The Oscar winner was originally scheduled to work with the director on his last film "The Master." She was supposed to play the role of Peggy. However it eventually went to Amy Adams who eanred an Oscar nominationfor the role.

Witherspoon recently signed on to work on Atom Egoyan's "Devil's Knot," Philippe Farlardeau's "The Good Lie," and Paul Feig's "Wish List." The actress is currently starring in the critically acclaimed film "Mud" with Matthew McConaughey. Witherspoon won the Oscar for "Walk the Line" in 2005.

Malone is best known for her work on "Pride and Prejudice," "Sucker Punch," and "Into the Wild." She will next be seen in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

Short last worked on "Frankenweenie" and "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted." He can currently be seen in "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!"

"Inherent Vice's" story is set in 1960s Los Angeles and follows the drug-fueled detective Larry "Doc" Sportello as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl. Warner Bros will finance and distribute the film and it will mark Anderson's first Studio film since "Punch Drunk Love" for Sony Pictures. He also worked with New Line on "Boogie Nights"and "Magnolia." The company has since been bought by Warner Bros. It was also reported that AnnaPurna pictures, which financed his last film "The Master," will not participate on the project. 

The film will also star Owen Wilson, Benicio del Toro and Kevin J. Anderson and is scheduled for release in 2014.
