Microsoft has rolled out the May update for their Surface tablets.

Starting with the Surface with Windows 8 Pro, tablet owners can expect a performance improvement courtesy of the UEFI firmware update enabling the PXE boot feature. The UEFI update will only be available when using the Surface with Windows 8 Pro's Ethernet Adapter.

Additional updates for the "Pro" tablet include the Trackpad Settings drive for Surface Type Cover enabling interaction with the Trackpad Settings app, however, this aspect is for Japanese customers only. Finally, as it has been the trend for a few months, enhancements in Wi-Fi connectivity are included.

The Surface with Windows RT is seeing most of its updates devoted to the speaker volume. The UEFI firmware update will improve the "RT" speaker volume and enhance the system's stability. Second, the Drive pack is improved to enhance the speaker volume as well. Finally, and similar to the Surface with Windows 8 Pro, a Trackpad Settings drive update for Japanese customers is included as well.

For the first time since January, the Surface with Windows RT tablet update will not feature fixes to Wi-Fi.

The updates for both tablets can be automatically installed, but to install it manually, users can swipe in from the right corner of the screen to tap on the "Settings Charm," followed by "Change PC Settings," then "Windows Update." Surface owners should then tap on "Check for updates now."
