Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is one of the most hotly anticipated games for both current and next-gen systems, but so far few details about the game have been revealed. Well, now lead script writer Darby McDevitt has unveiled some details about the game's overarching themes to Polygon, along with information about the game's protagonist, Edward Kenway.
McDevitt believes that the overall theme of the game will be immorality and repentance, noting that Edward Kenway is far from a moral character.
"Edward Kenway is a raucous and bawdy chap...but he's also a married man, and one of his primary motivation in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is to get rich and prove himself a 'man of quality' to his family and betters. So there is a special woman in Edward's life, but there are also other not-so-special women as well."
This leads directly to one of the new gameplay mechanics for the game. While previous installments of the series have used NPC's as a means to get missions done, Edward can use certain woman NPC's to seduce targets, making them easier to assassinate. This also ties into the story of the game, as Edward tries to repair his relationship with his wife, while at the same time having very "close" relationships with many different women throughout the game.
McDevitt notes that the game will be more open than any previous Assassin's Creed games, granting the player many different paths and decisions to the player. While it is unknown what role the dreaded Templars will play in the game, part of Edward Kenway's journey may involve the shady organization.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is be out October 29 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, and next-gen consoles.
