Former Welterweight Champ Ricardo Mayorga Wins MMA Debut

Former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga kicked off his mixed martial arts career with a victory, stopping Canadian grappler Wesley Tipper in the main event of Omega MMA "Battle of the Americas" last week.

Known as El Matador, the former Welterweight and Middleweight champion finally made his MMA debut since retiring from boxing in 2010.

Mayorga was originally scheduled to make his first MMA fight against former UFC contender Dan Thomas in the main event of Shine Fights "World Collide" before the promotions met its demise.

After a two-year hiatus, Mayorga entered the ring as a bloated fighter after tipping the scale at 175.9 pounds. On the other hand, Tiffer weighed in at 153 pounds for a bout which was originally set as a lightweight contest.

Boasting a 5-1 record before taking a three-year off from MMA, Tiffer dominated the fight early on after taking down Mayorga several times. The Canadian clearly controlled the bout against Mayorga, who completely lacks a ground-and-pound game.

Tiffer even had a chance to score a submission win with a triangle armbar, but Mayorga found his way out of the stranglehold following an apparent knee to the spine just before the end of the second round.

It was a double whammy for Tiffer as Referee Milton Rosales Toshi did not rule Mayorga's hit as a foul and eventually stopped the fight after doctors declared him unfit to continue.

Mayorga welcomed his first MMA win in a dramatic fashion as he jumped outside the cage and roared before a raucous partisan crowd in Nicaragua. A magnificent fireworks display immediately rose into the scene, serving as a perfect backdrop to a triumphant Mayorga.

Though Mayorga's victory might be a little bit questionable, there's no denying that the thrash-talking fighter has finally found a career after boxing.

Whether or not Mayorga will be successful in this craft is yet to be determined. For now, El Matador must be relishing the sweet taste of triumph, no matter how bizarre it was.
