After weeks of pretty much every possible source but Activision confirming Call of Duty: Ghosts, the game has officially been announced as a November 5 release.

The game will initially be released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Additionally, versions of the game for "next-generation" consoles are also in development, although Activision has not revealed how it will be different from current generation versions. A release date for these future versions has also not been announced.

According the official announcement, Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature an "all-new gameplay experience," with a new story, setting, and cast of characters. The title will also feature an unrevealed next-gen engine that the developers hope "redefines the series."

The official statement promises "Infinity Ward is going all-in to create the next generation of Call of Duty worthy of the world's greatest fans."

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin commented that this game will be a brand new direction for the franchise.

"Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we're not resting on our laurels," Rubin stated. "We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we're building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can't wait to share them with our community."

A new, live action teaser trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts has also been released. While it doesn't show much, actual gameplay is expected to be shown at the Microsoft unveiling event on May 21. That event will be streamed live on Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and on TV through Spike.
