The New York Police Department has released photos of what is believed to be debris from one of the commercial airliners used in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
The debris appears to be part of an airplane's landing gear and was found in between the rear of 51 Park Place and the rear of 50 Murray Street---the building behind it, according to police.
Authorities have sectioned off the area as they would a crime scene as investigators process the site, documenting and photographing the area.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an assessment on health and safety before the area is made accessible once again.
Whether or not the soil will be sifted to search for human remains is still unknown. But the aircraft debris will not be removed until the investigation is completed.
After the assessment comes to a close, the NYPD Property Clerk will secure the area.
A Boeing identification number is clearly visible on the debris as seen from the photographs that were released from authorities.
The discovery was made after surveyors, hired by the property owners to inspect the area, discovered the piece of the supposed landing gear and called 911 around 11 a.m.
