Gallup released its annual poll on stress and found that 40.6 percent of Americans feel stressed on any given day.

But even more specifically, the poll reveals which states are home to the most stressed out people.

More than 353,000 American adults were surveyed between January and December of last year for the poll and the results are in.

The highest rate of stress, 47.1 percent, was reported in West Virginia, while the lowest rate, 32.1 percent, came from Hawaii.

In general, people living in Northeastern and Midwestern regions of the country said that they feel the most stressed out.

But aside from the blatant data, there might be something more to the poll's results.

The American Psychological Association issued a report last year, explaining a possible link between stress and unemployment rates.

"Social scientists from a range of disciplines have provided cross-sectional evidence of a connection between unemployment and various indicators of mental health," the report read.

And to this point, Rhode Island came in this year as the second-highest stressed out state with 46.3 percent and the second highest unemployment rate last year at 10.8 percent.

In general, Gallup reported that states with the highest amounts of stress also report having less fun.

"While the relationship between stress and enjoyment is not clear, states with the highest stress levels tend to report less daily enjoyment," the polling company described in their report.

"Further investigation into what drives stress, how it impacts people, and ways to mitigate its effects are important, as 40% of American adults consistently report experiencing it a lot of the day 'yesterday.'"

The survey was compiled as part of Gallup-Healthways-Well-Being Index.
