An Illinois shooting left five people dead, including a grandmother, a young couple and their two children---ages 1 and 5---in a Manchester home.

The suspected gunman reportedly died after exchanging gunfire with police during a pursuit, authorities say.

Relatives have identified the victims as Joanne Sinclair, 65, her granddaughter Brittany Luark, 22, her boyfriend Roy Ralston, Nolan Ralston, 5, and Bradley Ralston, 1.

And although authorities have not released the identity of the suspect, relatives and neighbors say his name is Rick Smith, 43, who lived in Roodhouse-a town five miles from Manchester.

Cassidy Ralston, 6, another victim, is listed in serious condition, according to Brad Teeter, Sinclair's son-in-law.

"The guys broke into the house," Teeter said.

"I couldn't tell you about the guy, never met him, never seen him, never talked to him. He apparently broke into the home of my wife's mother and shot everybody inside."

"I'm at a loss right now," he said.

Ron Drake, Manchester's mayor, said that he saw a page about the shooting around 4:45 a.m.

And after a brief pursuit, the suspect was arrested just before 8 a.m.

"From the time they spotted him to the time they stopped was probably 10 minutes on the chase," Drake said.

Gunfire was then exchanged after the suspect was pulled over, state police reports.

State police has not released a motive, but the Chicago Tribune quoted a neighbor claiming that the suspect was in the middle of a custody battle with the mother.

"He was under a lot of stress," the neighbor said. "There was a lot of problems with custody with the daughter.

The neighbor also said that the suspect had custody of the daughter quite often but "I know there was a lot of friction with [her] family."

Drake said that there have not been any murders since living in the small town.

"It's a tragedy," he said.

"I've lived here for 43 years and my wife's lived here for all of her life and there's never been a homicide."
