New rumors say the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will feature a flexible plastic OLED display.
"Samsung Electronics Company (SEC) will exhibit a new Galaxy NOTE 3, featuring an unbreakable OLED display at IFA 2013 in September and plans to launch the product in Q4'2013. Based on our research, SDC will utilize a plastic substrate with an LTPS active matrix and RGB patterned OLED," according to the OLED Association.
"Compared to glass substrate type AMOLEDs, the flexible display features a thinner and lighter form factor, resulting in smaller size and higher mobility. The display size is also expected to range from 5.5-inch up to 6.x-inch," they write.
According to the specs provided by the OLED Association, a full plastic display is only half a millimeter thick, while glass is comparably thick, not to mention much easier to break.
We've heard rumors about "stretchy" or flexible displays for a long time, but this looks like it might actually pan out. Perhaps more interesting, though, is the assertion that the Galaxy Note 3 could have a display larger than 6 inches.
Recent rumors of 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch designs turned out the be the Galaxy Mega line, so the current best guess is a 5.9-inch display for the Note 3, up from 5.5 inches on the Note 2. But if the Mega line is firmly positioned as a mid-range offering, that leaves design space open for a larger Note 3.
The Galaxy Note 3 is still a long way off and won't be released until later this year. But rumors indicate it will have a 5.9-inch screen with a flexible OLED display, an eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor, 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, a bigger battery and run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. An unconfirmed source says the Note 3 will debut in Berlin in September.
