Samsung has officially announced its new Mega line of huge smartphones, which will begin to rollout worldwide in May.

As expected, the line will consist of two mid-range models, one with a 6.3-inch screen and one with a 5.8-inch screen.

The Galaxy Mega 6.3 will be one of the largest smartphones on the planet when it debuts, approaching the size of a small tablet.

It will feature a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, an HD 720p display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It comes with either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage, and its SD card slot can accommodate up to another 64GB. The 3200mAh battery should ensure length talk and standby times. It supports both LTE and HSPA bands.

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a smaller screen, 5.8 inches, though that still dwarfs nearly every other phone on the market, including both Samsung's popular 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2, itself considered a phone/tablet hybrid, as well as the upcoming Galaxy S4, whose 5-inch screen is still larger than most other phones. The screen of Apple's iPhone 5 is about two-thirds the size of the Mega 6.3.

The Mega 5.8 will only support the HSPA band. It is only available with 8GB on internal storage, and the screen will be a 960x540 qHD display. The processor also drops to 1.4GHz.

Perhaps the more interesting news is that it now seems likely that the Galaxy Note 3 won't have a 5.9 inch screen as some rumors have suggested. It would be odd for Samsung to make the Note 3 larger than a phone in its "Mega" branded line, which means either the Note 3 will have a 5.5-inch screen like its predecessor, or Samsung will increase the size slightly but not substantially.

We won't know for a while, since the Note 3 probably won't debut until September.
