Tom Cruise is finally opening up about his divorce from Katie Holmes last summer.

Cruise, who is making press rounds for his new sci-fi blockbuster "Oblivion," admitted that he "did not expect" to receive divorced papers after being married to Holmes for five years in an interview with German TV network ProSieben (via Germany's Bunte magazine.)

"I did not expect that," said the "Top Gun" actor.

After Holmes announced their separation on June 29, the estranged couple was able to reach a settlement two weeks later that gave Katie custody over their 6-year-old daughter Suri and Tom generous visitation rights.  According to reports, Holmes wanted out of their marriage due to Cruise's "controlling ways" over her and their daughter.  She also did not agree with his strong believes in Scientology.

Cruise revealed that news of the split, which Holmes announced just five days before his 50th birthday, gave him "an incredible amount of time to reflect."

"Life is a challenge," admitted Hollywood's highest paid actor. "To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you-that's what life is...Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humor."

For now, Cruise is working on major movie productions. "Oblivion," co-starring Morgan Freeman, is scheduled to hit theaters on April 19.  He's also starring in another sci-fi flick called "All You Need Is Kill," directed by Doug Liman.  Plus, he announced during a recent appearance on the U.K.'s The Graham Norton Show that he's "working on the story" for a fifth Mission: Impossible film.
