The City of Austin, Texas and Google have been sending out invites to a mysterious press conference. Together, they plan to reveal "a very important announcement" next week.

Analysts currently believe that this will most likely be the announcement that Google will be bringing Google Fiber, their gigabit internet service, to Austin. The city previously embarked a campaign to be the test city for the new internet service provider, although they eventually lost out to Kansas City. With Google already planning to expand its service to a second location in Olathe, Kansas, it makes some amount of sense that they're also looking at some additional, higher density locales.

Austin itself makes a lot of sense. It's a growing tech city that houses companies such as Dell, Samsung, Intel, AMD, IBM, Texas Instruments, and countless startups. Google has yet to comment on the speculation, but we'll find out soon enough when the company makes its official announcement on Tuesday, April 9 at 11 AM.

While Google Fiber seems like the most likely scenario, other possibilities include the announcement of a new Google Campus in Austin, or some sort of other local partnership.

Here's their full statement if you'd like to read it:

"On Tuesday, April 9, at 11 a.m., the City of Austin and Google will make a very important announcement that will have a positive impact on Austinites and the future of the city. We anticipate more than 100 community leaders and elected officials to be in attendance to celebrate this announcement. The event invitation is attached for your convenience. Although we cannot share the details of the announcement with you in advance, we know readers will want to learn more, so we encourage you to join us on Tuesday."

Google Fiber is currently only available in Kansas City, the location the company chose as its testing ground. After an overwhelmingly positive response, they announced plans to expand to Olathe, a city about 25 miles away.
