Apple's next smartphone could see a release date in July, according to a report from Japan.

The site MacFan is reporting Apple will hold an event on Thursday, June 20, to showcase the next-generation iPhone. In addition, the iPhone 5S is expected to go on sale in early July.

The iPhone 5S isn't the only smartphone making the latest news, as a low-cost iPhone is rumored to make an August launch. The low-cost iPhone will have a strong focus in Asia, namely China and India, where it may be sold as a pre-paid device.

A June or July launch is a familiar method by Apple, as it launched the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 between the summer months. The iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 made their debuts in the fall months.

A June 20 event would come around Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which is set to take place in June as well. As CNET noted, Apple did use the WWDC to announce the iPhone 4, iPhone 3, and iPhone 3GS.

The Japanese site's claim does match with Piper Jaffray's Senior Research Analyst Gene Munster, who has indulged himself on predicting an iPhone 5S release in June. In addition, he expects a low-cost iPhone to be out by September.

In regards to the iPhone 5S, Munster believes the smartphone will have substantial upgrades compared to the iPhone 5. With "an outside chance" of having an NFC chip, the iPhone 5S could feature a faster processor, improved camera, and a biometric security feature, although the latter could be saved for the iPhone 6 instead.
