On March 25th, "On the Road" will expand to Video on Demand.
The film by Walter Salles tells the story of a Young writer Sal Paradise who has his life shaken by the arrival of free-spirited Dean Moriarty and his girl, Marylou. As they travel across the country, they encounter a mix of people who each impact their journey indelibly.
IFC films released the movie in December for an Oscar qualifying run but failed to generate buzz or Oscar nominations. However two months later the distributor decided to expand it to 39 theaters where it opened to a solid $102,445.
The company will now expand it to Video on Demand so audiences all over the world will be able to see it from their home. They will also expand it to 100 theaters.
"Road" received mixed reviews with a 43 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics agreed that the film is "Beautiful to look at but a bit too respectfully crafted, On the Road doesn't capture the energy and inspiration of Jack Kerouac's novel."
The film stars Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Sam Riley (Control), Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia), Amy Adams (The Master), and Viggo Mortensen (The Road).
Salles is best known for "The Motorcycle Diaries" with Gael Garcia Bernal and Central Station for which he won a BAFTA award
IFC released a new clip of the movie to promote the On Demand release with Hedlund and Riley drinking, dancing and enjoying prostitutes. The movie is rated R for strong sexual content, drug use and language.
