Paraguay ended the 2010 World Cup in the quarterfinals against Spain. Uruguay ended that same tournament in fourth place. Times have surely changed for both sides.

Paraguay essentially has no chance of making the 2014 World Cup after falling to last place on the table with five points separating them from a berth. They will be without Captain Justo Villar and Roque Santa Cruz; both players were omitted from the team by manager Gerardo Pelusso. Both players were major pieces in leading Paraguay to the quarterfinals in the World Cup 2010. In the fall Paraguay lost 3-1 to Argentina before getting shutout 2-0 by Venezuela. The team followed those defeats with a 2-0 loss to Colombia before finally defeating Peru 1-0; it was the team's first win after losing five straight qualifiers.

Meanwhile Uruguay entered the fall as one of the top teams in the CONMEBOL. However, they imploded in a 4-0 loss to Colombia on Sept. 7. After the loss, Uruguay drew 1-1 with Uruguay before being shutout 3-0 against Argentina. Their most embarrassing display came in their latest qualifier when the Uruguayans were destroyed 4-1 by a weak Bolivian side; that victory was one many expected Uruguay to earn with facility.

Prediction: Uruguay and Paraguay draw 0-0.
