Apple vs. Samsung Lawsuit: Google Chairman Eric Schmidt Chimes In On 'Unfair' Patent Infringement Trial

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has commented on the ongoing patent infringement trial between Apple and Samsung.

Currently visiting India, the Google chairman appears to defend Samsung, stating Apple is using the patent infringement lawsuits to block the South Korean-based company from making an impact in the market.

"A number of companies, led by the telecommunications industry decided to use patents to stop innovation. A notable example is Apple sued Samsung in a number of courts trying to essentially not allow Samsung's products into the market," said Schmidt.

"Now, I understand that there is a dispute over patents but to deny people the actual choice, literally you can't even choose our product versus another, strikes me as completely unfair and very much not what the patent system was really about," he added.

Schmidt has given Apple credit. He stated Apple will continue to be a "tremendous" technology innovator and build "beautiful" products.

The Google executive's perspective comes two weeks after Latinos Post reported on Nokia's position on the Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement trial.

"Nokia's interest in this case is to advocate for patent laws that (i) protect patent rights as a means for promoting the constitutional goal of developing technology for public benefit; and (ii) foster and encourage innovation by allowing patent holders to obtain permanent injunctions against infringing competitors in appropriate circumstances," noted Nokia in their amicus brief, according to FOSS Patents.

Noting that the Finnish-based company takes "no position" on any of the substantive issues on the matter, Nokia added, "Nokia therefore supports the Appellant's [or Plaintiff's] request for reversal of the District Court's denial of a permanent injunction based on application of the wrong legal standard."

Nokia's statement came after U.S. District Court Judge Lucy H. Koh ruled the $1.05 billion verdict from last August would be cut by 40 percent. Apple won the billion-dollar verdict following a decision by a jury, but the judge stated she believes the jury incorrectly calculated portions of the alleged infringed patents.
