"Oz: The Great and Powerful" defeated newcomers "The Call" and "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone."
The Disney adventure, starring James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis, scored an outstanding $42.2 million bringing its total gross to $145 million and became the highest grossing film of what is 2013 so far. The drop was 47 percent and was about on par with a similar film 2010's "Alice in Wonderland." "Oz" is now on pace to make $230 million by the end of its run.
"The Call" took second place making an estimated $17.1 million. Starring Halley Berry, the Sony thriller exceeded expectations after an extensive marketing campaign. With a solid start, the film could wind up over $45 million.
In third place, "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," bombed with $10.3 million. The film suffered from an unclear marketing campaign and advertisements that were overly reliant on shrill gags like Carrey on a bed of coals and Carell trapped in a glass box. The film was also hurt by the lack of good reviews as it scored 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Jack the Giant Slayer" was down 37 percent after plummeting in its second weekend. The film made $6.2 million and has earned $53.9 million to date.
"Identity Thief" rounded out the top five with $4.5 million. It is now the number two film of the year and has earned $123.7 million.
In art house cinemas the Franco starrer "Spring Breakers" made an outstanding $270,000 for a $90,000 per theater average. The film also starring Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens is expected to expand nationwide next week.
