Bungie has just filed for five different trademark applications relating to their upcoming "shared-world shooter," Destiny.

The trademarks in question are for Glimmer, Fallen, Hive, Cabal, and Vex. If the United States Patent & Trademark Office approves them, Bungie will be able to use the names to create and sell "interactive game software, audio books, comic books, toys, Halloween costumes," and a long list of other products.

While Bungie has not officially commented on it, the names will be familiar to those following Destiny's development. Cabal and Vex have both been revealed as the names of two enemies, while Fallen has previously appeared in the game's marketing materials. While Glimmer and Hive have not been mentioned yet, it is likely that all five relate in some way to the upcoming game.

Destiny is set 700 years in the future. In the game's back story, humanity had successfully colonized the planets in the Solar System before an event known as "The Collapse" nearly wiped out our entire civilization. The only known survivors live on Earth, where they're protected by "The Traveler," a mysterious and massive orb whose appearance hundreds of years before had enabled humans to master space travel. As humans struggled to regain a foothold, they soon discover that various hostile alien races have since occupied our former colonies.

The game will be a first person shooter, and will incorporate many MMO elements. So far, not much else is known about the game or its mechanics.

Destiny is currently in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation3, and PlayStation 4, although recent rumors point towards additional platforms including the PC, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, and the next-gen Xbox system.

The game is being developed by Bungie, and published by Activision. It will be released no earlier than 2014.
