The Samsung Galaxy S4 (not S IV) finally made its official debut last night at a launch event in New York's Times Square.
Most of the late-game rumors and leaks ahead of the launch turned out to be true. Samsung hasn't released an official spec sheet, but here's what we know after the unveiling.
Processor
As expected, the S4 has an eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor. However, only four cores are ever in use at the same time, either the ones on the 1.6 GHz quad-core Cortex A15 or the ones on the 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex A7. That gives the S4 the performance of a quad-core processor, which is still pretty cutting edge, considering some new phones still only use dual-core processors.
There's still a bit of speculation that American versions of the phone will use a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, but there's been no official word yet.
Design
The S4 makes no great leaps in form, and at first glance it's hard to discern it from the Galaxy S III. Its top and bottom are slightly rounded and it continues the oblong shape of its predecessor.
It's slightly thinner and narrower than the S III, but the body materials are a similar kind of polycarbonate plastic, with thin light-colored edging.
Despite some earlier teasing that the S4 would come in different colors, it's only available in white and black.
Display
As expected, the S4 has a 5-inch Full HD AMOLED display with a 1920x1080 pixel screen at 441 ppi.
Camera
The S4 has a 13 megapixel rear facing camera, and a 2 megapixel front facing camera. Both cameras can take a picture at the same time to capture both subject and photographer.
In addition, the S4 has 2 GB of RAM, between 16 and 64 GB of internal storage, an SD card slot that accommodates up to another 64 GB of memory and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.
The S4 also sports other random but not revolutionary features like Smart Pause, which stops videos when a user looks away, and floating touch tech, which allows a finger held near the screen to act like hovering a mouse cursor to see previews of videos or contacts.
