Malaga was banned from European competition for the next four years due to financial problems, but the current squad is still a major contender in the current Champions League.
Malaga did the unthinkable and took down Porto 2-0 in the second leg and became the third Spanish team to make the quarterfinals this season; Real Madrid and Barcelona are the others.
''This was unthinkable not long ago and it's incredible,'' said Malaga's star player Isco. ''This is a dream come true for everyone here, given that no one in Malaga has lived through anything like this, but we've deserve it.''
"We came out of the blocks with a lot of intensity because that is what this tie demanded of us. We then settled into the match and showed what we were capable of," he stated about the victory.
Isco was a major part of the team's triumph. The youngster took a pass outside the Porto penalty area, dribbled to the line and rifled a shot from the right side into the left corner of the goal in the 43rd minute of the game.
After the half Porto's Steven Defour earned his second yellow card of the game and was ejected after he made a strong tackle on Joaquin Sanchez. The 10-man Porto played with abandon for the remainder of the match but was undone when a corner kick cross was headed in by Roque Santa Cruz.
"I think that this group of players and the fans deserved this," said Santa Cruz. "The friendship and closeness within the squad is fundamental. I am happy to have scored, and for the fact we won."
