2015 Volkswagen Golf Variant Makes Its Debut At The Geneva Auto Show - Overview, Specs, Expected Release [PIC]

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf Variant, replacing the VW Jetta SportWagen, and although details about what the new vehicle will be called in the U.S. remains unknown, it is clear what the car will look like.

Possible names for the U.S. rendition of the European-based Golf Variant are the Jetta SportsWagen, Golf SportsWagen or SportsWagen.

But regardless of the name, there are some details that were released surrounding the debut of the automaker's latest Golf model.

The new vehicle is expected to weigh up to 232 pounds less than its predecessor and be built on a modular-transversal MQB platform that is expected to be a component of other Volkswagen models in the future.

And there will be several turbocharged gasoline and diesel-powered engine options available in Germany.

As far as gasoline engines go, the entry-level model comes with a 1.2-liter TSI 85 horsepower, followed by upgraded 1.2-liter TSI 105 horsepower, 1.4-liter TSI 122 horsepower and a 1.4-liter TSI 140 horsepower engine options.

For diesel engines a 1.6-liter TDI 105 horsepower, 1.6-liter TDI 110 horsepower, 1.6-liter TDI BlueMotion engines with the highest version being the 2.0-liter TDI 150 horsepower engine.

All-wheel drive versions are also expected for the 2015 Volkswagen Golf Variant, as well as a version that can be powered by natural gas.

And while the unique style of the Golf may not appeal to all, Car and Driver magazine said that the design has vastly improved.

"The new car is more angular, and it features more horizontal lines and creases," the auto publication said. "We think it holds its own even when viewed next to the conventional three- and five-door Golf hatchbacks."

The U.S. version of the 2015 Volkswagen Golf Variant is expected to launch sometime next year.
