Microsoft has suspended the Windows Phone 7.8 update.

The update to Windows Phone 7.8 has long been expected for device owners of the Nokia Lumia 800, Lumia 900, Lumia 710, and Lumia 610. But now, Nokia has confirmed Microsoft's decision.

According to Omio, Nokia UK Communications Senior Manager Ray Haddow provided a statement.

"Microsoft has identified a minor issue in the Windows Phone 7.8 update and have temporarily paused delivery until it's addressed. We'll have more information as it becomes available."

The Windows Phone 7.8 update is considered as a "halfway house," according to CNET, from the Windows Phone 7.5 and the latest Microsoft mobile operating system Windows Phone 8.

Microsoft and Nokia did not specify on the "minor issue" in question, but the suspension does come over a week after a live tiles issue was reported.

As Latinos Post reported, live tiles pinned on the device have apparently led to battery and data drainage issues.

Heathcliff74 of WP7RootTools detailed the situation when he wrote he did not use his phone much during a particular day after updating to Windows Phone 7.8.

"Another thing I had noticed right after the update to WP 7.8 was that one of the pinned live tiles was empty," Heathclif74 stated. "I did not really pay further attention to it and I assumed the app would be updated soon enough if this was a real problem. But now I realized, that live-tiles needed to be updated and not much else is using data at that moment."

Microsoft has since commented on the matter in their Windows Phone Development Forums.

Microsoft Developer Support's Escalation Engineer Mark Chamberlain Sr. wrote, "Searching around the web, the issue of live tiles not updating has been corrected sometimes by blocking all the background tasks in Settings->applications->background tasks and setting the checkbox for those apps that you wish to restart the next time you start the app."

After further investigation, Chamberlain noted there are two issues at hand:

1. Live tile causing continuous web requests (and side effects such as battery drain)

2. Live tile failing to update.

According to Chamberlain, a fix would be in consideration in a future update, but that will remain unsure following Microsoft's suspension.
