Tomb Raider is indeed back, as the reboot to the franchise garnered the long-running series one of the best launches of the year. In fact, it beat out the previous owner of the best launch (Aliens: Colonial Marines) in the UK by more than doubling that game's sales, according to a report by Eurogamer.

This is the first time Tomb Raider has been released as a so-called "event title", so the game had six days to acquire sales to count towards the launch totals, However, PC download sales are not counted by Chart-Track, the company that acquires sales data for the UK. So the game still managed to gain the record week, despite having the sales of the game by Steam and other services not counting towards the overall numbers for the game.

The game also set the record on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for new week one records as the fastest-selling individual formats for any Tomb Raider release so far. The game also sold so much that it beat out the previous franchise record for sales in the UK, selling about twice as much units as the previous record holder (Tomb Raider: Legends).

This continues the good news for Crystal Dynamics' attempt to reboot the franchise. Joystiq reported that one million players were playing the game just two days after it was launched, so record sales numbers should be expected from the game internationally. Tomb Raider was released to worldwide critical praise from both critics and gamers. With the game being such a success in every facet, it is a smashing victory for the franchise that suffered in the past console generation. Now Crystal Dynamics can use this momentum to bring the franchise into the next generation of consoles.
