One woman was wounded and two men, including the gunman, were shot dead Friday morning in California after a stand off with police.

Around 3 a.m. police responded to a report of shots being fired in the Watts district of Los Angeles and upon arrival found a man shot dead inside a pickup truck parked outside of a house at Grape and 115th Streets, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Authorities say that shortly after police arrived on the scene a gunman opened fire from a nearby home, reports say, adding that a brief fire fight ensued as police returned fire.

The unidentified gunman ran and locked himself inside his home. A SWAT team entered the home around 5 a.m. and found the gunman dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police say the gunman also shot his wife, she was found inside the home in critical condition.

Authorities took into custody the couples' three children that were found in the home until they can be picked up by relatives. They are believed to be 1, 3, and 8-years-old.

Investigators have not said what may have led to the shooting.
