Apple's mobile operating system has topped the mobile and tablet operating system market share for the second consecutive month in 2013.

According to figures by NetMarketShare, Apple's iOS accounted for 54.91 percent of the operating system market share for February 2013. Apple's percentage tops Android by more than double figures. Android placed second with 25.65 percent. Java ME rounded the top three with 12.38 percent.

The Windows Phone operating system placed sixth with 1.24 percent of the market share.

The iOS numbers are down, however, compared to January 2013. Apple's operating system accounted for 60.56 percent of the market share while Android saw gains compared to January, although minor. The Android operating system increased from 24.51 percent compared to January.

The Windows Phone operating system also saw an increase in their market share by 0.09 percent. The January market share for the Microsoft operating system was 1.15 percent.

The numbers for iOS are different compared to the numbers released by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech and IDC Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker.

As Latinos Post reported, IDC Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker accounted Android operating systems with 70.1 percent while the iOS placed second with 21 percent during the recent fourth quarter.

"Android boasted a broad selection of smartphones, and an equally deep list of smartphone vendor partners," said IDC's Mobile Phone Team Research Manager Ramon Llamas. "Finding an Android smartphone for nearly any budget, taste, size, and price was all but guaranteed during 2012. As a result, Android was rewarded with market-beating growth."

Furthermore, the numbers by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech showed the Android topping the iOS in the U.S. with a narrow 49.4 percent to 45.9 percent.

"Part of Android's increase in the latest period can be attributed to its large gain in share within Sprint's smartphone sales," said Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst Mary-Ann Parlato. "In the three month period ending October 2012, sales on Sprint were divided almost 50/50 between Android and iOS. However, in the latest period, Android's share of Sprint sales increased by 22.6 percent points from 49.3 percent to 71.9 percent."

Either way, it appears iOS and Android comfortably dominant the tablet and smartphone market - far ahead of their rivals.
