Mark Teixiera will have more time to focus on the Big Apple as the WBC calls up Eric Hosmer.
Yankee's first baseman Mark Teixiera will be out at least two weeks after hurting his wrist while in a batting cage, effectively keeping him out of the World Baseball classic.
"I was kind of shocked," skipper Joe Girardi said. "He was taking swings in the cage and felt something. It was in his hand or wrist. I'm sure there will be more tests."
The injury was being labeled as a strained right wrist. X-rays would later come back negative after Teixiera was examined by a Yankee's team physician. The Yankees have already resembled a bit of a MASH unit with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez currently on the mend from injuries. They've also lost outfielder Curtis Granderson for the start of the opening season with a forearm injury. Outfielder Ichiro Suzuki was recently in an accident, but was not hurt.
Replacing Teixiera will be Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer. The 23-year old was ecstatic to be representing his country in the World Baseball Classic. "It's a great opportunity," Hosmer said. "Any chance you get to represent your country, you're going to jump at the opportunity, so I'm very excited." In 2011, Hosmer had an amazing season hitting .293 with 19 home runs and 78 RBIs in 128 games. He finished 3rd that year in voting for Rookie of the Year. Last season, he cooled off considerably batting .232 with 14 home runs and 68 RBI.
Fear of injury is a primary reason why team owners frown on non-league play. Former Yankees coach and current manager for the U.S. team in the World Baseball Classic expressed sympathy for Teixiera.
"I certainly feel bad for Tex, but it's one of those things, it just seems like it's unavoidable," said Torre. "You never want to wish a thing like this upon any player, especially here in spring training."
