Borussia Dortmund booked passage to the Champions League 2013 quarter finals after a dominant 3-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. The aggregate score over two matches was
Borussia Dortmund smothered the Shakhtar Donetsk offense throughout the first half and limited the Ukrainian giants to just three shots at goal; not one was on target. Dortmund dominated possession 63 percent to 37 percent before the half and had 10 chances on goal; three actually hit the target and two went in.
At the 31st minute, a corner cross was met by a header Felipe Santana. Six minutes later, Borussia Dortmund connected on a great passing play through the midfield. Robert Lewandowski broke down the right wing and threw in a low cross. The ball evaded a few Shakhtar defensemen and was tipped in by Mario Götze at the last second.
Shakhtar Donetsk was more aggressive in the second half and brought on Costa in place of Taison. The Brazilian almost immediately burst down the right side through the Dortmund defense and came close to scoring.
However, Borussia would add a goal in the 59th minute when Shakhtar keeper Andriy Pyatov fumbled a routine save. The rebound went to Jakub Blaszczykowski who controlled the ball and dribbled around the keeper to score the third goal.
Dortmund was widely seen as a top contender to win the tournament after winning the Group of Death which included Real Madrid, Ajax Amsterdam, and Manchester City.
