League of Legends continues its aspirations of world domination today, announcing that an open beta has launched for the Mac version of the game. The developers on League had previously announced an OS X client in 2011, but it was eventually cancelled due to performance and stability issues. "Yes, we're sure this time," the studio stated.

The Mac client was previously made available last month in the game's Public Beta Environment, but this new build will allow players to test actual versions of the game before they're released to the main public servers.

"Going native on Mac has been a big goal for us, and we’re really excited to offer the same experience across both platforms," Riot Games stated. "The Mac client does everything that the PC client does, meaning you’ll get all future features, bug fixes and new content on the same schedule as PC players, but on your native OS."

To celebrate the occasion, Riot has also released a Mac themed skin for Blitzcrank. The iBlitzcrank skin "comes equipped with crisp laser tethering and rippling electronic pulses that add new color to his spell effects," as well as "sci-fi-inspired sounds and animations." The skin is available for 975 RP.

Mac owners looking to download the client should expect around 30 minutes of update downloads before being able to jump into a match.

League of Legends is a massively popular game, and the move to fully support Mac players will only increase its reach. Since 2006, the game has accumulated over 12 million daily active players, 32 million monthly active players, and over 70 million registered accounts. To put that into context, there are more people logging onto League of Legends every day than there are in the entire World of Warcraft subscriber base.
