Most customers who buy second-hand clothes at shops like Goodwill are looking to save money or have fell on hard financial times. However, religious leader Pat Robertson warned that saying a prayer over a second-hand sweater would benefit Christians, not financially, but to rebuke demonic spirits that may be attached to the clothing.

On Monday's "700 Club" television show, a viewer asked if demons can attach themselves to material items.

"I buy a lot of clothes and other items at Goodwill and other secondhand shops," said a viewer named Carrie via email. "Recently my mom told me that I need to pray over the items, bind familiar spirits and bless the items before I bring them into the house. Is my mother correct? Can demons attach themselves to material items?"

Robertson answered the question by relaying a story about a girl who was troubled by a ring that had been prayed over by a witch. "She had to buy it and all hell broke loose because she finally recognized what it was," Robertson said, before claiming that demonic spirits have the ability attach themselves to objects.

The televangelist clarified that although all second-handing is not demon possessed, saying a prayer over the clothes won't hurt.

"Can demonic spirits attach themselves to inanimate objects? The answer is yes. But I don't think every sweater you get from Goodwill has demons in it," joked the minister. But in a sense, your mother's just being super cautious so hey, it isn't gonna hurt you any to rebuke any spirits that happen to have attached themselves to those clothes."
