Just Cause 2 was an expansive and innovative open world action game that managed to improve upon its predecessor in just about every way. That's not to say that the game didn't have its flaws, but if it's the start of a trend, Just Cause 3 should be pretty spectacular.

Rumors of a third game have been circulating for some time now. The developer, Avalanche Studios, has expressed an interest in making the game, although they do not technically own the rights to the IP. Square Enix, the distributor of the game, has so far reserved domain names for Just Cause 3 and 4, although that may just be a precaution.

Today, however, we may have just gotten our first clue that the third installment is in fact in development. Avalanche Studios head Christofer Sundberg shared an image on Instagram that shows a man jumping out of an airplane. Said man looks quite a bit like Rico Rodriguez, the star of the Just Cause series.

The description for the image is, "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? #yearoftheavalanche #avalanchestudios."

While Avalanche Studios has a few reported projects in development, the one codenamed "Project Mamba" is believed to be related to the Just Cause series. In any case, the screenshot bears too much of an incredible resemblance to the previous game to be a coincidence, and even if it isn't actually from Just Cause 3, Christofer Sundberg must have known that it would draw these comparisons. Whatever it is, there is little doubt that Avalanche Studios wants everyone to remember the series - for one reason or another.

The previous game was released in 2010 to widespread acclaim, eventually selling almost 1.5 million units. In addition to a third game, rumors are also circulating of a movie adaptation entitled Just Cause: Scorpion Rising.
