[Correction - 9:50 EST] Sony has asked us to clarify that no SOE EU accounts were affected by this intrusion, but only a small number of ProSiebenSat.1 Games EU accounts were compromised. If your account is among these, you will have received an email with instructions on how to reset your password.

Oh boy, here we go again. Sony Online Entertainment has sent out an alert that they've been hacked, and that certain user accounts may have illegally accessed.

The company believes it was isolated to the EU servers, which are actually run by a company called ProSiebienSat instead of SOE. While the company doesn't think that the intrusion made it past the account data encryption, they can't rule out the possibility that email addresses and passwords were accessed.

Just in case, they are requiring a password change on any accounts that may have been affected. If you're included in this group, you'll receive an email asking you to make the adjustment.

Additionally, if you are unable to log into your account, it may have been suspended for security reasons related to the hack. You can reactivate your account by heading to this page and resetting your password: www.planetside2.eu/en/forgot_password

We have detected that there recently has been unauthorized third-party access to one of our systems. The possibility that your data (Email address and password) has been accessed by an unauthorized third party cannot be excluded. We were able to detect the problem promptly and took all necessary actions to rectify the issue.

Your account data is encrypted with us for your security. Nevertheless, we have decided to take preventative measures in order to ensure the highest degree of security.

All accounts that may have been subject to unauthorized access have received an e-mail in which we have requested the user to change their password.

It's an unfortunate issue that seems to be cropping up more and more often in online spaces. Last year, a huge number of video game companies were hacked, leading to everything from email farming to password theft. While it's understandably a risk consumers knowingly take, it's still alarming considering how often information such as credit cards and other payment options are stored in online accounts. Even a simple stolen email address or password can have significant ramifications. If nothing else, it really nails in the importance of having different passwords for all of your online accounts, despite the inconvenience.
