This past Febuary 23, Calle 13's very own René Pérez Joglar aka "Residente" celebrated his 35th birthday.

"No había visto todos los mensajes! Gracias por todas las felicitaciones [expletive]!" (I had not seen all of the messages! Thank you for all of the birthday greetings [expletive]!) tweeted the Puerto Rican singer on Saturday.

As a gift, his fans on twitter created a picture collage for the singer which said "Residente C13, feliz cumpleaños. Latino America Unida." (Residente Calle 13, happy birthday. Latin America United.)

The next day Pérez tweeted a birthday picture where he is seen celebrating with two friends and Mexican actor and director Diego Luna.

Today, along with his stepbrother Eduardo José Cabra Martínez aka "Visitante" and their little sister Ileana Cabra Joglar aka PG-13, they form one of the most loved yet controversial musical groups of this era.

The band although labeled as reggaeton is known for their eclectic musical style which is influenced by rock, rap, ska, merengue, bossa-nova, salsa, Latin American folklore among others.

They see themselves as a refreshing alternative from the excessive machismo of reggaeton and instead choose to create lyrics that carry satire, black humor and social commentary which have gained them the respect of their followers and the attention of the media.

Up until this year, the band was one of the most decorated-- now tied with Colombia singer Juanes -- with a total of 19 Latin Grammys, nine of which they won at the 2012 awards for their album, "Entren Los Que Quieran" loosely translated as "those who want to, enter." That night the brothers not only created buzz with their big time win but with their message, "No a la payola" (No to payola), which Pérez said repeatedly at the end of the show after accepting the award for Album Of The Year.
