The 2014 Mazda CX-5 welcomes the automaker's Skyactiv technology engine that will be available on the six-speed automatic transmissions of the Touring and Grand Touring trim models.

The Skyactiv engine is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder that has been upgraded to 2.5-liters with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. And the new performance enhancements produce 29 more ponies and 35 more pound-feet of torque than its predecessor.

But these specs do not mean that the crossover loses any fuel-efficiency in 2013.

The front-wheel drive CX-5 has an EPA-rated 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, while all-wheel-drive models come in at 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. But Mazda also managed to fit in a larger fuel tank on the all-wheel-drive CX-5s, so range is estimated to be at 430 miles regardless.

Some of that stellar fuel efficiency is thanks to a Mazda's claim that the new crossover lost 14 pounds this year as compared to its predecessor that was already a lightweight.

And here is something interesting -- Mazda also claims that the 2014 CX-5 weighs less than their Mazdaspeed 3.

In terms of features, Smart City Brake Support makes its way onto the new CX-5 with the addition of the Technology package. The innovative braking system has the ability to speed up braking times when a potential collision is detected.

And for all you text-messaging fiends, the new CX-5 will actually read your texts aloud and display them on a touch screen.

A Pandora radio application is also slated to be available on the new model.

The 2014 CX-5 is priced starting at $21,195.
