Are steroids to blame for Oscar Pistorius's murder of his supermodel girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp?

That's one of the theories posited by South African investigators after steroids were found in the Olympian's Pretoria mansion, The Sun reports. Authorities have also found a bloodied cricket bat at the crime scene and evidence of heavy alcohol consumption.

"Steroid drugs were found at Pistorius's home together with evidence of heavy drinking. That's why police have specifically ordered that he be tested for steroids," an unnamed source close to the investigation told The Sun.

Pistorius, 26, is accused of shooting dead Steenkamp with a 9mm handgun around 3 a.m. on Valentine's Day while she tried to hide in the mansion's bathroom.

The steroids find leads investigators to speculate if "roid rage" may have pushed Pistorius over the edge. The banned performance enhancing drugs boost muscle strength, raise testosterone levels, and can trigger aggressive acts of violence.

Details of how the murder may have taken place have also slowly leaked from the investigation.

Authorities say Steenkamp was struck by four shots in the head and body. The first shot struck her in the hip as she ran from the gun-toting Pistorius in the master bedroom to the bathroom. Investigators believe she then sat on the toilet hunched over in pain from the wound when Pistorius walked up to the locked bathroom door and unload three more rounds. The shots tore through the door and hit Steenkamp.

She may have been trying to protect herself from the shots, experts say, as woulds were found on her arm and finger suggestion she was covering herself.

To added to the episode of gut wrenching horror that must have ensued that Valentine's Day morning, authorities say they found a blood-staind cricket bat in the mansion that may have been used by Pistorius. Investigators found skull "crush Injuries" on the 29-year-old model. Tests are now underway to determine if she was struck by the bat before the gunshots erupted.

Investigators also say the bat may have been used by Steenkamp to protector herself or that Pistorius may have used it to smash open the bathroom door.

Pistorius denies the allegations of murder and reports say he is expected to claim he shot Steenkamp mistakenly assuming she was an intruder.
