With less than a week to go until the HTC press event where the HTC One (formerly called the M7) is expected to be unveiled, HTC is beginning to tease the new device through Twitter and its website.

There were two teases today, one having to do with the table of elements, leading to speculation about whether the new flagship smartphone will contain, or partially be made of, some kind of metal that's new to HTC devices. The second tease, tweeted this afternoon, has to do with eyes and blinking, further sparking speculation.

The first photo, pictured above, has the HTC event date and logo embossed on some kind of brushed metal. There was also a tweet from the official HTC Twitter account saying, "75% of all the elements on the periodic table are metals." The nebulous message seems to be deliberately vague, leading to Twitter responses like "random" and "hint!" Perhaps there will be some sort of metal casing for the HTC One, though leaked images so far seem to have the device in white or black plastic of some kinds.

The second tweeted photo from HTC today is this close-up iris with the HTC release date embedded in the iris and something resembling a digital display of statistics, along the lines of a stock market or airport arrivals display. A tweet three hours later said "On average, a person blinks 16 times per minute."

These tweets are even more mysterious and hard to interpret. Will the HTC One surprisingly have some sort of eye-tracking sensor? Seems extremely unlikely. That technology is still in its infancy, and the idea that HTC managed to incorporate it into their new device without leaks getting out is borderline preposterous. Will the phone update its apps "in the blink of an eye?" Perhaps there's a more mundane explanation like that for the eye tease.

We'll be seeing very soon, as the unveil event is next Tuesday, February 19.
