In a senseless and random act of violence, a 10-year-old was shot dead and the youngster's mother and another woman were wounded Monday by a Minnesota man who opened fire on drivers near St. Paul, the Associate Press reports.

Around 6 p.m., the 33-year-old unidentified shooter fired two shots in the suburb of Oakdale at passing cars, authorities say, one woman was struck in the hand and the other in her arm. Both are expected to recover from their injuries.

The 10-year-old victim has not been identified by police, reports say.

"It appears to be entirely random," Sullivan told The Associated Press. "At this time it appears he was randomly shooting at vehicles."

Police have apprehended the shooter who is now being questioned by investigators. News reports say the man lives in the neighborhood.

"It's sick," Oakdale Mayor Carmen Sarrack said, adding "What can you say when a 9-year-old or 10-year-old is killed? ... People are devastated that this could happen in our city."
