An ice bridge connected to a glacier in Argentina's Patagonia region collapsed and the footage was filmed by a tourist lucky enough to witness the rare show in person, Live Science reports.
Christian Grosso, along with a group of about 30 other hikers, happened to be walking near the Perito Moreno glacier one evening in mid January when the ice bridge began to give and eventually tumble into the lake down below. Grosso and his group were safe high above viewing the power of mother nature.
The glacier, on of the largest in South America, is considered unusual because "its path takes it across an arm of a large lake," NASA scientist Jim Foster said. The glacier occasionally functions as a natural dam as it blocks one of the waterways of the Lake Argentino.
"Most glaciers don't have such trajectories, so bridging and tunneling, at least at this scale, is rather rare." Foster added.
The collapse may have been a result of a melting ice bridge that previously collapse in 2012 and caused a huge hole in the glacier.
