Wireless charging has been an increasing trend in electronics, and upcoming devices are expected to help push the technology even more into the mainstream. A new FCC sighting shows that Samsung has developed a wireless charging unit that could become an accessory for the Galaxy S3 or the Galaxy S4.
The folks over at Engadget managed to spot the device as it went through the FCC, and it looks like the device will utilize the QI industry standard. Engadget goes on to state that an imminent release is likely.
There are currently no details regarding how Samsung will introduce this device into the market. It will probably work in conjunction with Samsung's more popular devices such as the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2. The wireless charging feature, should also be making a splash with the Galaxy S4.
Less than a month ago, Korean news agency DDaily reported that Samsung was working on a wireless charging module for the Galaxy S4 that would allow for it to wirelessly charge the handset from distances as great as six feet. In order to achieve this, Samsung is apparently utilizing a resonant magnetic charging coil rather than electromagnetic induction. The coil would be attached to the back of the Galaxy S4, and will come with a larger backplate to accommodate the extra bulge from the coil.
As smartphones are becoming increasingly thin and being crammed full of high-end hardware, manufacturers are running out of space for the bigger batteries these computing handsets require. Wireless charging would mean that handsets don't have to be tethered, and with a constant flow of electricity would let phones carry on for much longer than they could have without it.
