Mike and Trina, a couple from St. Petersburg, Fla., believe that drinking coffee is unhealthy.

So how did they get around this obstacle?

Well, they inject the java into their colon to create a coffee enema treatment.

Mike and Trina say that they perform the unusual treatment, also known as Gerson therapy, at least 100 times a month and estimate that they have had 6,000 coffee enemas since their addiction started two years ago.

"I love the way it makes me feel," Trina said. "It gives me sense of euphoria."

Trina even admits to have performed "nine or 10" coffee enemas in a 24-hour period, but says that she usually has at least four a day.

But her husband Mike, 45,did not originally agree with his wife's strange version of a colonic.

"Oh my god, how disgusting," was his initial reaction. But Mike eventually tried a coffee enema, "and now I am addicted."

This java ritual is not just strange, but time-consuming as well---five hours of planning goes into the treatment, the couple says.

They fill a 32-ounce bucket with coffee and insert a Vaseline-coated hose into their rectum.

"That's the freaky part," Trina said. "So I try to relax."

And the couple even has different preferences as to the consistency and type of coffee they use for the enema.

Mike likes to use a fine espresso grind that is cool, while Trina opts for a "saturated blend" that is "warm and thicker."

Trina began the enemas after experiencing a number of health issues.

"I had a lot of stomach problems, digestive problems with my kidney and my liver," she said. "I started research and it led into coffee enemas and I really started to feel the benefit. I felt like I was living for the first time in years."

But the benefits associated with coffee enemas are still debatable.

Assistant professor of medicine and gastroenterologist at NYU Medical Center, Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa, does not endorse the use of coffee enemas.

"There's a down side and really no up side to it," she said.

And while there are numerous claims to some of the benefits related to coffee enemas like its cancer fighting ability and contribution to overall health, Rajapaksa says that these assertions are false.

"They claim it's a way of detoxifying and might even be an alternative to cancer treatment," she said. "There is definitely no evidence and I would hate for someone to forego [proven medical] treatment."

And there are even some risks associated with this kind of enema treatment.

"The bottom line is there is not any beneficial effect and there is some risk associated with any enema, and, in particular, using coffee," Rajapaksa said.

Traditional enemas already come along with some potential health risks and are only to be used under supervision of a medical professional, according to Rajapaksa.

"When you are inserting something into the rectum there is danger of causing a tear in the lining," she said. "Over using enemas can sometimes lead to dehydration and it can basically lead to a decrease in bowel function."

Caffeine, even when ingested, is a stimulant that contracts the colon and moves things along, according to Rajapaksa.  However, irritation can occur when injecting the caffeinated beverage into the colon.

"If it's a warm liquid you are using, then it can cause internal burns and some of the caffeine can be absorbed and those sensitive to caffeine, like pregnant women, have to be careful," she said.
