A massive storm system that started to wreak havoc Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2013) afternoon continues on its path east Wednesday, spanning from the Deep South to the Mid-Atlantic--according to The Weather Channel. At least one tornado was confirmed and several others expected.
The unusual January severe weather threatens major cities that include Charlotte, Raleigh, Philadelphia, New York City, Washington, D.C. and southern New England that could be hit with 60 mph winds Wednesday night, according to weather experts.
"The storms are pummeling the Atlanta metro right now," The Weather Channel's Dr. Greg Forbes, severe weather expert, said today around 2:30 p.m. eastern.
Forbes also noted that there is "a narrow band with gusty winds" zeroing in on Baltimore and Washington and expects severe weather to hit the area within the hour.
The nasty storm system has already caused severe damage in Adairsville, Ga., 60 miles northwest of Atlanta, and has resulted in overturned cars on Interstate 75 and people trapped in buildings. Bartow County Fire Chief Craig Millsap reported that one person has died in the storm's wake.
Television footage shows long stretches of manufacturing plants destroyed and a funnel cloud making its way through the downtown area of Adairsville.
Since the storm's arrival on Tuesday, there have been 500 damage reports across a large area from Missouri to Georgia. The numbers are only expected to increase as the system moves through the Carolinas, Mid-Atlantic and southern New England Wednesday night.
More than 500 flights have been canceled as of 2:30 pm. eastern as a result of the massive storm system, most of them coming from New York City and Philadelphia---according to Flight Aware.
