Lolo Jones jumped over a hurdle Sunday to win a gold medal, but that hurdle was only figurative. The United States bobsledding team won it in the combined bobsled-skeleton team event at the world championships, the AP reports.
Jones was the brakewoman for Elana Meyers on the women's side of the team. The event added the times in the two-man bobsled in both the men's and women's skeleton to determine a winner.
The U.S. beat Germany by 0.24 seconds for the gold, despite the Germans winning three of four categories on that track.
Meyers and Jones were the third-fastest pair in the women's bobsled.
Jones was a three-time NCAA champion in hurdles and notched 11 All-American honors in her collegiate career with LSU. She won gold medals previously in the World Indoor Championship in both 2008 and 2010, but failed to match those performances in either the 2008 or 2012 Olympic Games, despite being a serious contender.
In 2008 in Beijing, Jones tripped on a hurdle late in the 100m race, ending up in seventh place. Despite the fall, Jones holds the U.S. record from a separate race, running the 60m hurdles in 7.72 seconds.
In the 2012 Olympic Games, Jones finished fourth, missing out on her first career olympic medal.
In October of 2012, Jones changed courses, continuing her goal of pursuing a medal through an entirely different sport: bobsledding. She was named to the U.S. national team along with fellow track and field olympian Tianna Madison.
