The Surface Pro is right around the corner, and the consumer-oriented Surface RT launched this fall, but Microsoft isn't done yet. According to a SlashGear report, the tech giant is focused on diversifying its selection of hardware, potentially offering a cheaper model of its hybrid device in the coming months.

"[Microsoft is] working closely with chip partners and OEMs to bring the right mix of devices," said Microsoft CFO Peter Klein at an earnings call. Klein was direct in his ambition to "expand the product lineup [with] a greater variety of devices at a bigger variety of price points."

The Surface RT's reception has been middling, but the Pro promises to pick up the slack where its predecessor failed to perform. Notably, several outlets commented on the RT's lackluster processing power, an area that the beefed up Pro more than makes up for. Whereas the Surface RT uses a scaled-back version of Windows 8, the Pro takes full advantage of Microsoft's new operating system, and adds a pressure-sensitive stylus to the mix. The new ad touts that "the highly responsive screen captures your notes and drawings in the finest detail."

On the technical side of the coin, the Pro features a multi-touch 10.6-inch screen with a 1920x1080 resolution, Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, USB 3.0, an integrated Intel GPU, up to 128GB of memory, and a new pressure-sensitive pen tailored for graphic artists and image editing software. The Pro comes in both 64GB and 128GB flavors, priced respectively at $899 and $999.

Microsoft's Surface RT boasts a 10.6-inch screen, but only displays at a 1366x768 resolution. A quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 2GB of RAM fill out both 32GB and 64GB versions of the device.
