Actor James Franco may have entered himself in the running for the highly coveted role of Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of E.L. James' bestselling erotic novel '50 Shades of Grey' with his recent string of erotic films, but a recent interview with MTV News gives evidence that the actor doesn't think too highly of the series.

The controversial actor is scheduled to premiere three raunchy and erotic films/documentaries during this year's Sundance Film Festival. The films, "Lovelace," Kink," and "Interior. Leather Bar," all revolve around sex, BDSM and pornography. Each film, which stars Franco either on screen or off, could have the potential to catapult the 34-year-old to the top of the contenders list for the coveted '50 Shades' role.

However, during an interview with MTV News, Franco said, "[Kink] is for all the '50 Shades of Grey' fans. This is what you're reading about. This is the real thing. This is what it looks like. This isn't the dime store version of bondage. This is what bondage is like."

The "Spring Breakers" actor added, "If you think about the origins of each of these [Sundance] films, it is a coincidence...But if you think about it as there's something in the air-and I do believe there are waves of things that interest filmmakers and people in television-then maybe it's not such a coincidence."

The actor's comments, which all point to him believing '50 Shades' is "the dime store version of bondage," may not sit well with fans of the hugely popular series. Whether or not fans are still willing to consider him for the role of Christian Grey remains to be seen.

Despite there being no official casting decisions announced, fans have not stopped guessing who will take up the role of the seductive millionaire Christian Grey. In a recent fan poll conducted by Latinos Post, "Man of Steele" actor Henry Cavill beat out longstanding favorites Ian Somerhalder ('The Vampire Diaries') and Matt Bomer ('White Collar') by nearly 40 percent.

Official casting decisions for the series will not be announced until the film's script has been written and a director has been chosen, James and screenwriter Kelly Marcel have told reporters. Until January 2013, only Marcel and producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti have signed on to the project.

No release date has been announced yet.
