Floyd Mayweather Jr. is planning to make his last fight this September a memorable one, possibly the last fight before he finally puts a close to his storied boxing career.
The name of Amir Khan has been abuzz as his likely opponent but like before, Mayweather is in no hurry to close the book. To this day, the unbeaten American boxer has yet to name his opponent despite the fact that Khan believes that it will be him fighting Mayweather this September.
Regardless if that opponent would be Khan or someone else, Mayweather believes that his next opponent will be "solid."
Mayweather has been known to hold back any announcement and will always want to be the one to officially announce the fight. Before his historic fight against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, he rescinded any unofficial announcement made by Top Rank, including Pacquiao.
Whether it be Khan or anybody else for that matter, Mayweather wants to be the one to announce it.
Right now, only the Briton seems to be a worthy opponent for the flamboyant boxer who already had talks with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Khan claimed that he and the elder Mayweather conversed via Facetime where a lot of swearing reportedly took place.
Khan revealed that Mayweather Sr. told him that his son would easily defeat him to which Khan responded with “if that’s the case, then let’s get a fight made." If you missed that article, you can view it here.
Mayweather has been out of the boxing scene since his May 2 clash with Pacquiao. The undefeated boxer won handily via unanimous decision over the Filipino boxer and announced that he would be fighting one last time before calling it quits.
Pacquiao was ruled out after the Filipino boxer underwent surgery for his injured shoulder, paving the way for a possible tiff with Khan.
A Mayweather vs. Khan bout is nothing new since there had been negotiations back in 2014 for both fighters to face off.
The negotiations eventually bogged down after Khan reportedly had problems with the date of the fight (ironically September, too) since he would not have ample time to prepare for the fight.
This year is different, though, since the Muslim Festival will end earlier, July 17. After initial doubt, Khan says that he would have enough time to prepare for a September match with Mayweather Jr.
The fight has not been made official and Mayweather remains coy on whom his next opponent will be.
Majority believe it will be Amir Khan unless Mayweather finds a better fighter to contend with this September.
