PS4 News: Release Date Apps Revealed for Watching Movies, TV Between Playing Games

The PlayStation 4 will be available on Nov. 15, and while there has been plenty of attention paid to the games, accessories, and features the console will have at launch, not as much focus has been on the apps that players will be able to use on the console at launch. Now, Kotaku has revealed the list of apps that PlayStation 4 owners will have available to them on release day and it is quite the list, barring some glaring exceptions.

Two of the biggest apps coming to the PlayStation 4 at launch are Netflix and Hulu Plus. While these apps were expected to come to the console, it's good nonetheless to see them confirmed for the device. This will allow users to stream movies and television shows on the next-gen console when they are in between sessions of Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4 and Knack. Two other big streaming services that will be on the console on day one include Amazon Instant Video and Crackle. Both these streaming services have begun to pick up steam, and could begin to rival Netflix and Hulu Plus in the future. Redbox Instant will also be available for download, after recently coming to the PlayStation 3 as well.

For sports fans, two big apps will help PlayStation 4 owners get their fill of the action. NBA Game Time and NHL Center Live will be available on the console, which will help keep fans in the middle of the action. Plus, both the NBA and NHL have only just started their new seasons, so PlayStation 4 owners will be able to catch up on all the basketball and hockey action during the season.

As for the rest of the apps coming to the console at launch, there are many options for users to download and check out. Crunchyroll, EPIX, VUDU and YuppTV will also be available on the PlayStation 4 on Nov. 15.

While Sony and their partners have brought many of the major apps to the PlayStation 4, there are some omissions that must be noted. The biggest missing app is Youtube, though players can work around this omission by using the web browser to access the Youtube web page directly. Another big missing app is Twitch, the professional gaming channel that streams tournaments to players directly.
